Hamid, un algérien de 40 ans qui vit à Bruxelles et travaille comme coursier dans un réseau illégal reçoit un appel de son frère qu'il n'a pas vu depuis 30 ans. Hamid pense que c'est un piège de la police, mais il va quand-même en Suisse et rejoint son frère ... Le film de Colla parle du rapprochement difficile entre frères dans un climat de méfiance et paranoïa.

Brief synopsis (English)
Two brothers in their forties meet for the first time at their mother's funeral. They have grown up separately, one in Algeria, the other in France. Because one of the two is involved in a radical Islamist group and is arrested shortly before the funeral, he believes his brother is working for the police. The film tells the story of the difficult reconciliation between the brothers in a climate of mistrust and paranoia.

Hamid, un 40enne algerino che vive a Bruxelles e che lavora come corriere in un sistema bancario illegale riceve una telefonata di suo fratello Louis, che non ha visto da oltre 30 anni. Hamid che si sente sorvegliato dalla polizia pensa che sia una trappola. Ma siccome Louis insiste, Hamid va in Svizzera per incontrarlo.

Zwei Brüder treffen sich mit 40 zum ersten Mal an der Beerdigung ihrer Mutter. Sie sind getrennt aufgewachsen, der eine in Algerien, der andere in Frankreich. Weil der eine radikal islamistischen Kreisen nahesteht und noch vor der Beerdigung verhaftet wird, hält er den anderen für einen Polizisten. Der Film erzählt die schwierige Annäherung dieser beiden Brüder in einem Klima von Misstrauen und Paranoia.

Hamid, à la quarantaine, il a été élevé en Algérie, vit à Bruxelles, joue le rôle de courrier dans un réseau bancaire illégal, est en guerre perpétuelle avec le monde et avec lui-même. Il reçoit un coup de téléphone de Louis, son frère cadet qui a grandi en Suisse et qu'il n'a pas vu depuis trente-cinq ans. Il apprend que leur mère, qu'il avait également perdue de vue, est hospitalisée en Suisse et désire le voir. Il croit tout d'abord que son interlocuteur appartient à la police et se fait passer pour son frère, mais il finit tout de même par partir. La rencontre est marquée par les difficultés et les rebondissements. En route pour l'hôpital, Hamid apprend par son frère que sa mère est morte quelques heures plus tôt. Il veut repartir pour la Belgique ; mais tous deux sont pris dans un contrôle de police. Hamid, qui est fiché comme transporteur de fonds en raison de son activité, doit subir un interrogatoire, et n'est relâché que moyennant caution. C'est Louis qui acquitte la somme en question. Pourtant, au lieu de lui en être reconnaissant, Hamid nourrit de la méfiance à son égard. Qui est ce Louis ? Quelles sont ses véritables motivations ? Les deux frères, accompagnés d'Isa, la compagne de Louis, se rendent au domicile de leur mère. C'est là que commence leur confrontation avec leur passé. Au fond, Hamid et Louis veulent tous deux comprendre ce qui s'est produit au moment de la séparation de leurs parents. Pourtant, la méfiance et la rivalité les empèchent d'aborder la question de façon ouverte. Hamid disparaît avec Isa. Louis et la police se lancent à sa poursuite. La situation se corse : Hamid doit surmonter sa colère, Louis jouer cartes sur table et choisir son camp. Louis et Hamid sont comme Abel et Caïn : des rivaux. Ils sont issus de deux cultures différentes, l'Islam et le monde occidental, mais ils sont les deux moitiés d'un tout, et c'est cette réunion, la formation de cette unité qui est l'objet et l'enjeu de ce film.

Hamid, a 40-year old Algerian who lives in Brussels, believes he is being tailed by the police. He works as a courier for an illegal network suspected of financing terrorist acts. When he receives a phone call from his brother Louis, who has grown up separately from him and whom he has not seen for 35 years, he suspects that the police are behind the call. Nevertheless, he travels to Switzerland to meet Louis in the hope of seeing his mother. She, however, is no longer alive. When Hamid finds this out, he wants to return to Brussels, but the two brothers run into a police checkpoint and Hamid is interrogated. The police want information on the network and about his work as a courier. He refuses, is locked up and it is only the next day that he is released on bail. He now knows that the police are in fact after him, but what he really wants to discover is what role Louis, who has paid his bail, really plays in the whole affair. Hamid is free, thanks to the bail, but he is not allowed to leave Switzerland, and is dependent on his brother. Louis not only wants to know the reason for Hamid's arrest, but also the reason for their separation, their fatherâ's identity and why the family broke apart. The confrontation between the two becomes a struggle for both closeness and distance, overshadowed by mistrust and rivalry. With different weapons, they also fight over Isa, Louis' girlfriend, who is finding it progressively harder to relate to Louis and feels attracted to Hamid. This difficult fight over several rounds is necessary in order for the two brothers to show their colours and open up so that they are able, at the very end, to meaningfully engage with one another. Although they have grown up in different cultures, they are in essence two halves of a single whole.

Hamid, ein 40jähriger Algerier, der in Brüssel lebt, fühlt sich von der Polizei beschattet : er arbeitet als Kurier in einem illegalen Netzwerk, das im Verdacht steht, Terrorakte zu finanzieren. Als er einen Anruf von seinem Bruder Louis erhält, der getrennt von ihm aufgewachsen ist und den er 35 Jahre lang nicht mehr gesehen hat, vermutet er die Polizei hinter dem Anruf. Er reist dennoch zu Louis in die Schweiz, weil er hofft, seine Mutter zu treffen ; doch die Mutter lebt nicht mehr. Als Hamid dies erfährt, will er nach Brüssel zurück, aber die beiden geraten in eine Polizeikontrolle und Hamid wird verhört. Er soll Auskunft geben über das Netzwerk und über seine Arbeit als Kurier, doch er weigert sich, wird weggesperrt und kommt erst anderntags gegen Kaution wieder frei. Er weiss jetzt, dass die Polizei tatsächlich hinter ihm her ist, aber viel lieber wüsste er, welche Rolle Louis, der die Kaution geleistet hat, in der Sache spielt. Denn Hamid ist dank der Kaution zwar frei, aber er darf die Schweiz nicht verlassen und ist seinem Bruder ausgeliefert. Dieser will nicht nur wissen, warum Hamid verhaftet wurde, sondern auch, warum es damals zur Trennung kam, wer der Vater war und warum die Familie zersplitterte. Die Begegnung der beiden wird zu einem Kampf um Nähe und Distanz, überschattet von Misstrauen und Rivalität. Mit unterschiedlichen Waffen kämpfen die beiden auch um Isa, die Freundin von Louis, die mit Louis immer weniger anzufangen weiss und sich von Hamid angezogen fühlt. Es braucht diesen schwierigen Kampf über mehrere Runden, damit die beiden Brüder Farbe bekennen und sich öffnen, damit sie sich - ganz am Ende - einlassen können aufeinander. Denn obschon sie in unterschiedlichen Kulturen aufwachsen sind, sind sie im Grunde zwei Hälften eines Ganzen.
