Il film racconta la storia di un anziano violinista (Ettore Rossetti), che si è ritirato a vivere in solitudine alla periferia di Lugano. Prima che un incidente mettesse bruscamente fine alla sua carriera, suonava uno Stradivari. Quando gli viene conferito il Premio alla carriera della città di Lugano, dice nel discorso di ringraziamento che la musica gli ha rovinato la vita. Nella stessa occasione viene premiata quale miglior esordiente Lea Melini, una violinista diciannovenne. Affascinata dalla personalità eccentrica di Rossetti, il giorno dopo la ragazza decide di andare a trovarlo. Avendo litigato sia con i suoi genitori che con il suo ragazzo, convince Rossetti ad affittarle per qualche giorno una stanza nel sottotetto. I genitori di Lea, preoccupati per la scomparsa della figlia, assumono un investigatore privato (Beccuti). Una notte Rossetti ascolta la ragazza suonare ed è come se avesse sentito il canto delle sirene. Decide di „liberare“ lo Stradivari, che è chiuso nella cassetta di sicurezza di una banca, per regalarlo a Lea. L’impresa si rivela molto difficile perché la sentenza di divorzio – del tutto ingiustamente – ha assegnato lo strumento all’ ex moglie di Rossetti, che si vede quindi costretto a rubarlo senza lasciare tracce. L’ex moglie, insospettita dal rinato interesse dell’ex marito per lo Stradivari, ingaggia lo stesso investigatore assunto dai genitori di Lea. Le confusioni e gli equivoci non tarderanno a complicare le cose. Per eseguire il furto Rossetti chiede aiuto alla donna che gli pulisce la casa, Michelle. Superati gli scrupoli iniziali, Michelle si lascia conquistare dall’impresa: affitta una cassetta di sicurezza, studia le misure di sicurezza della banca ed escogita per Rossetti un piano ben congegnato. In sottofondo, mentre fervono i preparativi per il furto, tra i due inizia a nascere una storia d’amore. Quando il momento cruciale si avvicina, il piano sembra destinato al fallimento, invece – fortunatamente – riesce. Il violino, e Rossetti con lui, sono „liberi“. Le energie vitali in lui si sono risvegliate e si prepara, nonostante l’età, ad affrontare con entusiasmo nuove sfide.

Der Film erzählt die Geschichte eines älteren Mannes (Ettore Rossetti), der zurückgezogen an der Periferie von Lugano lebt. Er war früher Violinist und spielte auf einer Stradivari, bevor ein Unfall seiner Karriere ein jähes Ende setzte. Als ihm der Preis der Stadt Lugano für sein Lebenswerk verliehen wird, sagt er in der Dankesrede, die Musik habe sein Leben zerstört. Lea Melini, eine 19jährige Violinistin, erhält am gleichen Abend den Nachwuchspreis. Von Rossettis eigenwilliger Erscheinung fasziniert, beschliesst sie, ihn am andern Tag zu besuchen, und da sie sich mit ihren Eltern und ihrem Freund zerstritten hat, überzeugt sie Rossetti, ihr für einige Tage ein Zimmer im Dachstock zu vermieten. Leas Eltern, über das Verschwinden ihrer Tochter beunruhigt, engagieren einen Privatdetektiv (Beccuti). Eines Nachts hört Rossetti die junge Lea Geige spielen, und es ist, als hörte er die Klänge einer Sirene. Er beschliesst, die Stradivari, die im Safefach einer Grossbank liegt, aus ihrem „Gefängnis“ zu befreien und Lea zu schenken. Dies ist umso schwieriger, als das Instrument im Scheidungsprozess – völlig zu Unrecht, notabene - seiner Ex-Frau zugesprochen wurde, so dass Rossetti es stehlen muss, ohne Spuren zu hinterlassen. Seine Ex-Frau bekommt Wind vom neu erwachten Interesse ihres Ex-Mannes an der Stradivari und engagiert den gleichen Detektiv wie schon Leas Eltern, was zu turbulenten Szenen führt. Für den geplanten Diebstahl bittet Rossetti seine Putzfrau Michelle um Hilfe. Nach anfänglichen Bedenken lässt sich Michelle für die Sache gewinnen: sie eröffnet selber ein Safefach und studiert die Sicherheitsmassnahmen der Bank, um Rossetti einen ausgeklügelten Plan vorzulegen. Und während die Vorbereitungen auf Hochtouren laufen, bahnt sich zwischen den beiden ganz nebenbei eine Liebesgeschichte an. Als die Stunde der Wahrheit naht, scheint der Plan noch zu misslingen und gelingt dann – glücklicherweise - doch. Die Geige ist „befreit“ und mit ihr auch Rossetti. In ihm sind die Lebensgeister erwacht, er ist ganz übermütig und steuert - trotz seines Alters – auf neue Ufer zu.

The film is about an elderly violinist (Ettore Rossetti) who had retired to live in solitude in the outskirts of Lugano. Before an accident suddenly put an end to this career, he played a Stradivarius. When the city of Lugano awards him a prize for his career, he says in his acceptance speech that music has actually destroyed his life. At the same event, a prize is awarded to the best debutant musician, Lea Melini, a 19 year old violinist. Fascinated by the eccentric personality of Rossetti, the young girl decides to pay him a visit. Then, after a falling out with both her parents and her boyfriend, she talks Rossetti into renting her an attic room for a few days. When Lea vanishes, her parents become worried and hire a private investigator (Beccuti). One night Rossetti hears Lea playing and it is like listening to the chant of mermaids. After that, the old musician decides to "liberate" the Stradivarius, which is locked up in a safety deposit box at the bank, and give it to Lea. Doing this was not an easy accomplishment as Rossetti's divorce settlement unfairly assigned the instrument to his former wife. Rossetti is thus compelled to "steal" the violin without leaving a trace. His ex-wife becomes suspicious when she notices his renewed interest in the Stradivarius and she coincidentally ends up hiring the same detective as Lea's parents. A series of misunderstandings and mix-ups further complicate the plot. Rossetti asks his cleaning lady, Michelle, to help him take possession of the Stradivarius. Having put aside her initial scruples, Michelle is excited by the request. She rents a safety deposit box, looks carefully into the bank's safety policies and dreams up the perfect plan for Rossetti. As preparations for the theft progress, Rossetti and Michelle become romantically involved. When things come to a head, the plan seems destined to fail, but in the end it is successful. Both the violin and Rossetti are "set free". The musician's vital energies are reawakened and, in spite of his age, Rossetti is now ready to face new and exciting challenges.
