Synopsis in italiano
Gaetano ha 60 anni e nel clan di famiglia al quale appartiene è diventato solo l’autista del boss. Sogna di abbandonare la mafia e di ritirarsi in campagna, ma la mafia non la si lascia facilmente. Sua moglie è la sorella del boss e i sogni di Gaetano non li capisce.
Quando Gaetano conduce il boss dalla Calabria in Ticino per mettere sotto pressione Müller, un magistrato svizzero che sta investigando sul clan e ha bloccato certi conti bancari, scoppia una sparatoria. Il boss muore e Gaetano fugge. Prima di fuggire viene a sapere dal magistrato ferito, che per gente come lui, Gaetano, c’è un programma di protezione di testimoni. Müller esorta Gaetano ad andare a Montisio per avvertire una donna che vive lì e che si chiama Paola Bianchini.
Così inizia l’odissea di Gaetano verso la sperata libertà.
Arriva alla fine di una valle in montagna e viene considerato un poliziotto calabrese dalla poliziotta di nome Maria che sta investigando contro il sindaco. All’inizio Maria non rivela di essere lei Paola Bianchini. Gaetano entra in questo ruolo e da mafioso diventa un poliziotto. Quando diventa palese che Müller è stato rapito e Maria non ha delle prove contro il sindaco di Montisio il suo capo la vuole sospendere dall’inchiesta. Lei però non vuole arrendersi e il capo le dà 48 ore.
Maria pretende da Gaetano col quale ha fatto amicizia che lui visiti Amanda, una fotografa in contatti dubbiosi col sindaco. Gaetano deve soprattutto atteggiarsi da boss mafioso e fare pressione sul sindaco. Così il piccolo mafioso che non sa sparare, da un giorno all’altro diventa un boss che si fa rispettare. Fino a quando le cose vanno alla deriva per Gaetano perché emerge la realità: all’incontro finale con il sindaco, al posto del suo boss non c’è nessun’altra che sua moglie, che adesso ha in mano le redini del clan.
Gaetano fugge di nuovo, decide però di tornare indietro perché non vuole lasciare Maria sola con la mafia. Così si arriva al regolamento dei conti nel quale Amanda mostra il suo vero volto, le manovre della mafia sono svelate e anche Gaetano non nasconde più i sentimenti che ha per Maria. Dove ci sono state offese, minacce e spari alla fine vince il bene contro il male. Sì, vince il bene perché vogliamo credere che la mafia si possa combattere e che vale la pena lottare per la propria libertà.
Synopsis auf deutsch
Gaetano ist knapp 60 und hat es im Familienclan, zu dem er gehört, nicht weiter als bis zum Chaffeur des Bosses gebracht, weil er nicht töten kann. Er träumt vom Ausstieg aus der Mafia und vom Rückzug aufs Land, doch von der Mafia kommt man so schnell nicht los. Seine Frau Rosetta ist die Schwester des Bosses, und sie hat für Gaetanos Träume nichts übrig.
Als Gaetano seinen Boss (Salvatore) von Kalabrien ins Tessin fährt, um Müller, einen Schweizer Staatsanwalt, unter Druck zu setzen, weil dieser gegen den Clan ermittelt und Schweizer Bankkonten gesperrt hat, kommt es zum Schusswechsel. Salvatore stirbt und Gaetano ergreift die Flucht. Er hört nicht auf den verletzten Müller, der ihn bittet, ihn zu befreien. Für Leute wie ihn existiere ein Zeugenschutzprogramm ! Gaetano will einfach nur fliehen. Dann soll er wenigstens nach Montisio gehen und eine gewisse Paola Bianchini warnen, schreit ihm Müller nach.
So beginnt Geatanos Odyssee.
Er landet in Montisio, am Ende eines Bergtals, fragt dort nach Paola Bianchini, ohne zu erklären warum und wird von der Polizistin, die unter dem Namen Maria eine kleine Pension führt, um verdeckt gegen den Bürgermeister von Montisio zu ermitteln, für einen kalabresischen Polizisten gehalten. Gaetano schlüpft in diese Rolle, weil ihm Maria gefällt und weil er hofft, als italienischer Polizist ihr Vertrauen gewinnen zu können. Er vermutet zu Recht, dass Maria die gesuchte Paola Bianchini ist.
Als Maria von ihrem Chef erfährt, dass Müller gekidnappt wurde und sie in Gefahr ist, gibt sie sich Gaetano als Paola Bianchini zu erkennen und verlangt von ihm, dass er ihr hilft. Er soll zunächst bei Amanda, einer dubiosen Fotografin, die im Dorf wohnt und mit dem Bürgermeister in engem Kontakt steht, eine Wanze platzieren. Danach soll er als Mafiaboss den Bürgermeister besuchen und ihn zu einem Geständnis zwingen. Er soll ihn bedrohen, weil dieser mit Salvatore Geschäfte gemacht hat und nicht mit ihm.
So wird der kleine Mafioso, der nicht töten kann, über Nacht zum coolen Boss, bis ihm die Sache aus dem Ruder läuft, weil ihn die Realität einholt : denn an Stelle des umgebrachten Salvatrore erwartet ihn am finalen Treffen mit dem Bürgermeister niemand anders als seine Frau Rosetta, die nun das Zepter führt.
Gaetano ergreift erneut die Flucht, und kehrt dann doch um, weil er Maria nicht allein zurück lassen will. So kommt es zum Showdown, wo Amanda ihr wahres Gesicht zeigt und sich die Machenschaften der Mafia entpuppen, wo auch Gaetano sich vor Maria nicht mehr verstecken kann (es auch nicht will), wo beleidigt, gedroht und geschossen wird, bis am Ende das Gute über das Böse siegt. Denn in einer Komödie darf der Schwache siegen, darf die Mafia bekämpft werden und die Liebe triumphieren.
Synopsis in English
Gaetano has just turned 60 and, in the family clan to which he belongs, hasn't managed to make it any further than the boss's driver. He dreams of leaving the mafia, of retiring to the countryside, but it's not that easy to get away from the mafia. His wife, the boss's sister, doesn't think much of Gaetano's dreams.
When Gaetano drives his boss from Calabria to the Tessin in order to put pressure on Müller, a Swiss public prosecutor who is investigating the clan and has frozen their bank accounts, an exchange of shots takes place. The boss dies and Gaetano flees. Before doing so, he learns from the prosecutor, who is left behind wounded, that a witness protection programme is available for people like him. Müller asks him to drive to Montisio to warn a woman named Paola Bianchini, who is living there.
Thus begins Geatano's odyssey in search of his yearned-for freedom.
He ends up in a remote mountain valley, where a policewoman who is investigating the mayor under the assumed name of Maria and who initially conceals her true identity of Paola Bianchini, believes him to be a Calabrian police officer. Gaetano assumes the role, turning from a small-time mafioso into a policeman. Maria is called back by her chief when it becomes clear that Müller has been kidnapped and she fails to produce any evidence against the mayor of Montisio. But she doesn't want to give up and the chief gives her another 48 hours.
She now asks Gaetano, with whom she has become friendly, to visit Amanda, a photographer, who is involved in shady dealings with the mayor. But above all, his task is to act the mafia boss and apply pressure. Thus, overnight, the petty mafioso who can't shoot becomes the "self-assured" boss. Subsequently, things get out of hand as reality catches up with him: in place of his murdered boss, it is no other than his own wife, who now leads the clan, that awaits him at his final meeting with the mayor.
Gaetano flees again, but then returns because he doesn't want to leave Maria behind with the mafia. A showdown ensues, during which Amanda reveals her true face and the mafia's plot is exposed, during which Gaetano is also unable (and is no longer willing) to hide from Maria and during which insults, threats and shots are let loose before good ultimately defeats evil. Yes. The good wins, because we prefer to believe that the mafia can be overcome, rather than the other way round, and that one's own freedom is worth fighting for.
